Social Media Channels – Where To Begin & Where To End

Let’s be real. We know there are more Social Media channels than any business (or Marketing team) knows what to do with. We’re not talking about the most familiar ones listed below, we are talking in total, with more coming.

Does a business absolutely need to be on every single channel there is?


The channels we are most familiar with for businesses
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • X (formerly Twitter; how long are we going to keep using that?)
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
What are some of the questions a business should ask itself when deciding what channel(s) to be on?
  • Where are our customers?
  • What capacity does our Marketing person / team have?
  • What kind of content can we create?
  • What are the capabilities of the channel for engagement, sharing, links, etc?
  • What is our goal with each channel we choose to be on?
  • What if our budget for social marketing?

As the old, familiar saying goes…”quality over quantity”. If your Marketing team is stretched too thin they won’t have the time needed to create posts with thorough planning. Nor will they have the bandwidth for follow-up, which is a vital piece of engagement and organic reach.

Also, remember that your team will need time to review and analyze previous posts and associated activity. Are you reaching goals? Is engagement happening? Are you too heavy on pitching, and too light on people? (Another topic for another day.)

If your business decides to NOT be on a particular Social Media channel, do you secure the business name on the channel for the “just in case” scenario of the future?


This doesn’t mean you have to be active on that channel, or advertise it on your website. Actually, it’s best not to if you are not actively using it. Alerts should be set up should someone tag your company. Undeniably, you can trust us when we say that it can be a huge hurdle should you decide years down the road that you want to be on a social channel, and surprisingly someone else has the ID that best fits your business.
